Sitting in the computer lab at school..already reminiscing about the wonderful morning I had with the bear. As for those who don't know about the bear..the bear is the bear.
Going away on vacation to St. Martin (8/26-9/2) made me realize that I'll always be a city girl. The people there just relax 24/7, depending on whether it's the high tourist season or the low-approaching the dead season. Driving around, we could see people just sitting out their porches, baking in the hot weather. How could people just live like that?
The answer: we're New Yorkers. We live in the hustle and bustle; our lives timed to the MTA schedule for when the buses or trains arrive..or not. As much as we want to get away from it all, we soon realize that we actually can't. Some of us think about that drama we're desperate to watch, our e-mails that are overly full, how many messages or wall posts we need to answer on facebook or myspace. To take a vacation, you need to vacate-vacate the house, the office, the internet, the phone, everything.
On the trip, because the price of internet and phone minutes increases 1000% of what we have to pay in New York, we boycotted it entirely. Of course I was homesick and cried twice (1 - the moment we drove away from my house for the last time before being gone for an entire week - i'll divulge in the next blog post 2 - not being able to call home for 3 nights and missing home terribly then crying more when I finally got to hear my brother's voice..ok 2 1/2 times?)
I can say I'm not attached at the hip to any internet connection, there are times when I forgot e-mails and anything virtually related for days on end. Regardless, we did it. It was one of the most relaxing experiences we could have ever had, thanks to being 5000 miles away from home without a good signal on our phones.
Our daily routine fell into this:
6:30 AM - wake up and be shocked that we were awake at this time
6:30 AM - 8:30 AM can't actually recall but there were times when we straightened out some stuff, read up on what to do for the day, watch the news forecasts on hurricanes Gustav, Hannah, and Ike. Surprisingly, the news were all what we watch in New York. Nothing about what was happening in St. Martin. We weren't smart enough to read the newspaper there everyday because it was named "The Miami Herald" so we thought the news was catered to those who lived in Miami..but lo! it was all about St. Martin. Damn.
8:30 AM - 9:15 AM Head down to the Sunset Cafe located right in our Grand Case Beach Club resort for our free continental breakfast which entailed coffee, croisants, orange juice, loaf of the long bread. The cafe is located right above the water which gave us a gorgeous view of the beach and the different buildings of the resort. Also in view is Creole Rock, a pair of islands where people can take a trip on a boat and go snorkeling among the reef and its inhabitants there.
9:15 AM - 5:00PM
i've got to get to class so i'll have to finish this post later...until then my newfound inspiration to blog..LATER!
